FIRE SKILLS

ARTISTS ARE MULTI SKILLED & WILL PERFORM A NUMBER OF FIRE SKILLS IN ANY PERFORMANCE

Fire Spinning

Fire spinning uses a variety of props that are spun or twirled in the air and around the performer’s body, arms and legs. Fire spinning usually creates circular patterns of fire during the performance.

A variety of props can be used in fire spinning including fire poi, fire staff, fire hula hoop, fire ropes and fire swinging clubs

Fire spinning has become increasingly popular and is now an essential element in outdoor fire shows because it creates one of the most impressive visual displays

Fire Juggling

Fire juggling is the throwing an catching of fire props. Whereas fire spinning props are usually limited to the manipulation of two props, fire juggling can involve the use of three to seven props or more. The most popular fire juggling props are fire torches (or fire clubs). These can be juggled by a solo performer or passed between two or more performers. The visual effect of fire juggling is different to that of fire spinning but it is great when space is limited or when a different visual effect is required. Fire juggling is also most commonly used as a fire finale in a comedy juggling show.

Fire Eating

Fire eating is the extinguishing of a lit fire prop using the performer’s mouth. This fire skill is often confused with fire breathing (see below). Fire eating skills add a sense of danger and daring to any fire performance

Fire eating is usually performed as part of a smaller scale display or where space is limited or where the theme of the act requires it. Fire eating is one of the most popular fire skills and can be performed as part of a full fire show or as part of a comedy act.

Fire Breathing

Fire breathing is the spraying of an flammable liquid from the performer’s mouth which is ignited by a fire prop. This fire skill is often confused with fire eating (see above). Fire breathing skills are the most dangerous fire skills and a limited number of fire artists perform this skill.

Fire breathing is always performed as part of a larger scale fire display or as a single stunt as it cannot be performed for as long as other fire skills.

Body Burning & Fakir

Body burning (often described as part of ‘fakir’ skills) is the passing of lit fire props across the body either touching the skin or in very close proximity. Body burning skills are often combined with other fire skills such as fire eating and fire breathing as part of a show that demonstrates the fire performer’s mastery of elemental fire.

Body burning is usually performed as part of a show where the audience can witness the danger and therefore it is more suited to smaller scale performances.

Pyrotechnics

Pyrotechnic skills and props are used by fire artists as a spectacular part of a finale to a fire show.

Pyrotechnic performance is usually performed outdoors as it most often requires a large amount of space to be performed safely. Indoor pyrotechnics are also possible.

Other Fire Skills

The skills shown above describe the main fire skills used in fire performance. However a range of skills including other fire skills contribute to any fire performance. Additional fire skills include the ‘burn off’ (as shown in the photo) or the use of a variety of other props that are ignited and which can create amazing effects or visual skill displays.

Other skills incorporated into fire shows include dance, comedy and performances that are themed for the event e.g. jesters, chefs, burlesque, Arabian, and belly dancing.
